Choosing an attorney is an important personal decision. Advertising volume, a national-sounding name or a past result does not establish that a lawyer is the right fit for a particular case.
Verify identity and licensing
Ask for the full name of the lawyer and firm responsible for the matter. Verify licensing and public disciplinary information through the official authority in each relevant state. If another firm will participate, ask who it is and why.
Ask about relevant experience

- Does the firm have experience investigating the occupations, products and locations involved?
- Who will perform day-to-day work?
- Does the firm expect to associate local or trial counsel?

Discuss strategy and expectations
A responsible lawyer should identify uncertainties, not guarantee results. Ask about possible jurisdictions, defendants, trust claims, benefits, deadlines, evidence gaps and alternatives. Ask how settlement decisions are made and confirm that the client retains authority to accept or reject an offer.
Privacy and communication
Ask how medical and exposure information will be stored, shared and transmitted. Confirm who can access the file, whether calls are recorded, how frequently updates are provided and how to reach the responsible team.

- Guaranteed compensation or case acceptance
- Pressure to sign immediately without reading
- Refusal to identify the responsible lawyer or firm
- Requests for upfront payment to unlock a settlement
- Claims that a website can calculate a filing deadline
- Unexplained transfer of the matter to another firm
- Requests to exaggerate or alter exposure information
